Spoke with Mikkel this afternoon and we discussed the philosophy of changing track and adding a Town Hall structure model so late in the project as opposed to keeping on track. In the end, it comes down making the specific decision for specific reasons and, right or wrong, making sure I document the process involved in going one way or the other.
Some of Mikkel's concerns were his experience with it not typically being a good idea to add something so big so late in the process, and whether there was time to model the structure and keep it up to par with the quality level of the rest of the landmark structures.
I know it will take a good few hours to put this particular building together. The design, as I described previously, is pretty complicated architecturally. But that's also its appeal. I think Jim and I would both like to have a building like this, but it's probably not essential at this point.
Tomorrow I will be spending the majority of the day at the Interfaces Conference in Troy. I plan on working tonight on finishing up (or at least progressing on) the finals for my other remaining projects in different classes. I've got hours I can potentially schedule for dedicated modeling Sunday afternoon, Monday evening, or Tuesday morning. Sunday is iffy. Of four total projects remaining that are due this coming week (including this one), two of those are due first thing Monday morning. Chances are, Sunday will be primarily devoted to finishing those off. I'm considering this project "due" on Tuesday afternoon, with my last final due Thursday night. Therefore, any chance I'm going to have to work on a major piece would probably have to come Monday afternoon or evening.
In the spare minutes here and there, I'm going to continue to pick some "low hanging fruit" on this project, and make a decision tomorrow on whether to go ahead with the Town Hall. I will post by Saturday evening what my intentions are.
The low hanging fruit for today includes:
- Livery: Blacksmith's anvil, hammer, and tongs
- General: Mexican Lime Cactus flora
The anvil and the tongs were decently complicated models. Spent probably an hour to an hour and a half getting them together. The cactus was simpler and faster, but I'm not sure I'm happy with the poly count. It's not gaudy or outrageous, but 230 polys for a simple piece of flora that will be duplicated all over the environment might be a little bit excessive. I'll probably look to cut some down on that.
Next major update here I'll post additional screenshots of the new Blacksmith gear and anything else modeled between now and then.
