If you haven't played the legendary Street Rod, the game made by California Dreams and released in 1989 on the Commodore, Amiga, Atari ST, and DOS PC, you haven't played a racing game worth the trouble of installing it.
Sure, it didn't have fancy 3d graphics, or lifelike physics. But what it did have was every wannabe grease monkey's ultimate dream come true: to buy a classic car, tune it, and race it on the main drag for cash or pinks, while working your way up to "The King" in his black 1963 Corvette.
Set in 1963, the game gave you a couple hundred bucks and a newspaper. From the newspaper, you bought the rust bucket of your dreams and maybe a simple upgrade part. You could upgrade virtually every component of the car from intakes to tires, and even adjust the timing manually in a little mini game. Then you took your car out to the diner to raise funds for better and better gear.
So in a fit of nostalgia, I set about doing some concept modeling for a would-be modern update of the game, beginning with the familiar garage scene. Whether I can get a couple programmers and another artist on board to ever actually remake it, I don't know. But it was fun putting the garage scene together. It's just about done here. If I get around to future updates, I'll post them on the blog, as usual. Enjoy!
